HAIR CARE

The period during which the hair grows in any individuals is Cyclic. In the growth phase, called anagen, hair grows at the rate of approximately 1cm per month. But the hair length depends upon the duration of activity of hair follicles i.e. anagen, which varies from individual to individual. At the end of anagen phase the hair stops growing further and enters into a relatively short transitional phase called Catagen. Which lasts approximately three weeks on a human scalp. Catagen phase leads to resting phase known as telogen, which lasts for about three months. At the end of telogen phase, old hair fall and is replaced by new hair. Average numbers of hair fall is about 60 to 100 and replaced in healthy person daily. One should only worry if hair fall per day exceeds 100.
Normal growth rate of hair is 0.37 every day, the length and colour is genetically determined.
At birth hair density 1135/cm2 after one year it is reduced 800 and about 600 up to 30 years from 30 to 50 years of age the number is reduced to 485. This reduction in density also contributes to hair loss. General

It is due to premature precipitation of anagen follicles into telogen phase which is supposed to be a common response of the follicles to different types of Stresses and strains. Diffuse hair loss from the scalp leads to reduction in the total mass of the hair.
2. Male Pattern Baldness: It is due to androgenic stimulation of predisposed hair of follicles with reduction in the anagen phase and increase in number of telogen follicles. The age of onset of alopecia varies, but it does not start before puberty. Initially there is backward recession of the frontline hairline with widening of the forehead. It may follow loss of hair from Vertex. With increasing age, hair loss becomes more and more prominent. In a few people most of the hair on the scalp are lost except a rim of hair on the side and back of the scalp.
3. Alopecia Aerata : This problem is more common in children and young adults. The patient notice single or multiple patches of hair loss. This can be localized to an area of the scalp only or may involve the whole scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and any other part of the body. When the loss of hair from the scalp is compete it is called Alopecia Totalis.
